    on your behavior If you only tap on friends nearby we should surface more friends in your feed and fewer new people If you only tap on designers we should show you more designers There is a lot of math involved and when it works the results can be pretty magical Sometimes though it s nice to just ask you To this end we ve upgraded the settings to contain a new section called Set up Highlight With a few taps you can tell us exactly how you want to use the app For example you can tell us you just want to know when your friends are nearby or that you re interested in meeting people within a given age range You can even tell us that you want to see people with certain words on their profile like UI UX founder or spelunking When you do this we ll use the data to show you more relevant people in your feed to find you matches from a wider radius and to personalize the notifications you receive Imagine being able to tell Highlight I only want to use the app to find designers and only getting notifications when a

    because it hinted at the entirely new world that passive location services could enable We were excited about the new level of visibility that SXSW 2012 brought to the space but we knew that we had a lot of work ahead of us Before it could hit the mainstream the technology would need to mature In the 24 months since then it s matured quite a bit Mobile hardware and operating systems have steadily improved New geofencing APIs have allowed location services to operate with significantly less battery drain A new low energy version of Bluetooth has emerged Wearables motion sensors and activity trackers have entered the mainstream zeitgeist And we ve figured out quite a few things on the engineering front Today we re excited to launch the Highlight Developer Blog and to publish our first post How we improved Highlight s battery life 5x which talks through some of the engineering work we ve done to get Highlight s background battery usage below 1 per hour We re looking forward to sharing a lot more of our team s work in the coming months and to releasing some open source tools that we hope will be helpful to
