  • The Green Knight: We Choose To Go To The Moon!
go to the Moon We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy but because they are hard Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept one we are unwilling to postpone and one we intend to win and the others too I find this to be the essence of leadership Kennedy mobilized an entire nation in pursuit of a common peaceful goal He empowered our best scientists and engineers to over perform and he supported them with the resources necessary to realize a seemingly impossible dream Less than eight years after this speech was given hundreds of thousands of Americans and some key Germans had come together to develop the myriad diverse systems to launch humans into space from Earth escape Earth s gravitational pull arrive precisely at the Moon maintain orbit around the Moon jettison a vehicle to land on the Moon sustain human life both inside and outside the vehicle launch humans into space from the Moon rendez vous with an orbiting space craft escape the Moon s gravitational pull re enter Earth s atmosphere and land safely in the ocean Wow It is a true testament to what humans are capable of when they are motivated and unified around a common goal Wow As many of you know I believe that humans not just Americans but all humans must unify around a new common goal addressing the global energy challenge The myriad diverse systems necessary for us to revolutionize energy production transmission storage and consumption will require an even more Herculean effort than did the quest for the Moon However looking back at what we did 40

  • The Green Knight: London
cool For lunch I met the former president of Wiess College at an Indian restaurant before heading back to catch some Wimbledon It s too bad that Andy Roddick couldn t quite pull it off what a coup that would have been for an American on Independence Day weekend US men s volleyball also didn t quite come through finishing 3rd in the beach world championships American women though had a much better weekend with Serena and Venus dominating Wimbledon and our women winning the beach world championships During the marathon 5th set between Roddick and Federer I met up with an old friend from Lovett College who is currently finishing his MBA at Oxford We watched the end of the match and then made our way to Shepherd s Bush Empire for a Jimmy Buffett concert This venue was excellent Although it was larger than The New Morning Jazz Cafe where he played in Paris last year it still seated My friend and I were standing down near the front maybe 30 from Jimmy and having a great time singing at the tops of our lungs meeting other Parrotheads and drinking Guinness The concert was great and I m so glad I could make it Unfortunately while I was videoing Why Don t We Get Drunk and Screw a rogue beachball jarred my phone from my hand and now my picture taking capabilities are defunct Oh well if you re going to break your camera that s not a bad way to do it Now it s back to work in Lausanne where I have a tremendous amount to accomplish this week Because of my sickness last week this will be my first time in the office in a while bring it on Posted by Bryan Hassin at 17

  • The Green Knight: The End of an Era
etc It s an outstanding example of crowd sourcing and of leadership I ve always held that the test of true leadership is when your followers don t have to do what you say You can t fire them or penalize their salaries In this case the Yearbook Committee was able to assemble hundreds of articles and pictures through sheer determination and creating a coherent vision that the rest of us bought into Bravo And speaking of the Yearbook Committee I visited one of its members everyone s favorite German Engineer this weekend in Cham just outside of Zug He and his wife and 8 month old son have really set up a good life for themselves out there We went for a walk along Lake Zug and dined al fresco with fresh pasta and homemade sauce La dolce vita The real treat of course was getting to know their son who was in utero during my first group with the German Engineer and who arrived during my ICP with him Their son was very well behaved and showed his father s curiosity combined with his mother s kind expressions I spend so much of my life focusing on what s wrong with Poken s business processes with the world s energy consumption etc that it s just really heart warming to see that in some parts of the world good people are starting families and living good lives Note that I don t mean to imply that they live glutonous lives quite the contrary given that they focus on recycling and buying local produce simply good lives Many thanks to this burgeoning family for being great hosts and I hope all continues to go well for them in an era that does not end Posted by Bryan Hassin at

  • The Green Knight: Mixed Media
indicated that movie was pretty faithful to it It was interesting pretty well done 4 I finished Malcolm Gladwell s Outliers his third in a string of engaging thought provoking books I question some of the causality in the cases he makes but they are interesting nonetheless and I would recommend this book Reading it gave me pause for thought about the opportunities I have had and especially about the unique high school environment created for us at TJ Fortune has definitely smiled on me throughout much of my life and I m not sure I deserve it All I can do is my best and hope that I live up to the extraordinary opportunities with which I have been blessed On another note things are absolutely crazy at the Poken office these days We have flown in our new Web interface development team for war room style productivity This has effectively doubled our headcount but of course we haven t increased our office space at all Result high entropy Chaos might be a better word but it seems to be productive The new team members are nice and smart and a good addition to our existing uberteam Posted by Bryan Hassin at 18 24 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels books Jimmy Buffett Led Zeppelin movies music Poken TJHSST video games No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 March 2 February

  • The Green Knight: Heidelberg
have a castle of our own In the evening we met up with Katie s aunt for dinner We went to a local brewpub where I was delighted to discover that we were right in the middle of Germany s white asparagus season Naturally we took advantage of this fact in each course and accompanied it with dark dark German beer After dinner we paid a visit to Schwetzingen Castle a much more modern palace than Heidelberger Schloss but no less impressive We arrived too late to walk the expansive grounds so we will just have to return some day Saturday we returned to Lausanne and attended an IMD MBA mini reunion Well technically it was supposed to be a networking event for the class of 2009 However so many of my classmates were there that it was difficult to do much more than excitedly catch up with them I m not complaining Katie took off early on Sunday far too soon but it was a great week Pictures are in my facebook album Posted by Bryan Hassin at 02 00 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels asparagus castles Heidelberg imd Lausanne 1 comment Anonymous said I am glad to see you enjoy your life and business in Lausanne But I have to point out that you didn t ignore the beauty of summer there last year I am the witness of your beach volleyball and running exercise during that period I am also doing well in Seoul after the initial boring project Overall I am satisfied You can find it if you can read my Chinese blog Hopefully it s going to be in Korean soon Alex Tuesday June 16 2009 at 9 33 00 AM EDT Post a Comment Newer Post

  • The Green Knight: Chance Encounter
to join me in ping pong so we played against two executives in doubles Our first game wasn t pretty but Martin had just enough time for a second before he had to rush off to the train station We barely won the second game so he HAD to stick around whether he had time or not for a tie breaker Fortunately we won the third game handily and he made his train on time What a fortuitous meeting IMD truly is the global meeting place for executive ping pong On a more somber note I wish all my family both immediate and extended a good May 28 Wow 19 years Posted by Bryan Hassin at 01 21 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Guido Hassin imd ping pong No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 March 2 February 3 January 2 2014 26 November 4 October 3 August 3 July 3 June 7 April 1 March 3 February 1 January 1 2013 32 December 2 November 3 October 3 September 2 August 1 July 1 June 2 May 2 April 1 March 2 February 2 January 11 2012 35 December 2 November 1 October 4 September 3 August 6 July 4 June 3 May 4 March 3 February 1 January 4 2011 47 December 5 November 4 October 3 August 5 July 2 June 4 May 8 April 2 March 5

  • The Green Knight: It Finally Happened
a forehand smash I felt something on my shoulder After putting the smash away for a winner I looked back and was surprised to see what was obviously bird poop On May 23rd 2009 at approximately 11 30 AM 30 years and 2 months to the day after I entered this world my great streak was finally broken It s actually kind of a relief Bogdan and I already share a special bond because we went into the cold cold lake together after beach volleyball earlier this year Now we shall truly be united forever thebrotherhood of Poken sports and bird poop 4 After ping pong we went to play some beach volleyball and then met up with another coworker Dave for a late lunch Dave and his family had arrived in their boat so they took us out for a quick tour of the lake I m embarrassed to say it but after almost 18 months in Lausanne this was my first time actually out on Lake Geneva Crazy Better late than never though It was fun looking at Lausanne from the outside in We traced all the paths I usually run along and it felt like I was looking at them from the other side of a mirror 5 I beat Military Madness and am now starting over playing as the bad guys I really don t have any time to play video games but it really is therapeutic to devote brain cycles to strategy in a context other than Poken 6 Rice baseball is undefeated in the C USA tournament and will play in the championship game tonight Go Owls Bogdan and I are off for some more ping pong and volleyball then this evening I ll work on a presentation for a talk I am giving
