a song based on oldies and folk music Mom harmonized with him and added her own classical and contemporary musical themes I jammed out to that for awhile and eventually added my own chords of classic rock blues and even some funky stuff that neither of my parents ever would have liked Today the juke box still has many of Dad s original 45s but some of them have been swapped out for Mom s contributions Hello Jimmy Buffett and some for my own Cream and Jimmy Hendrix to name a few So the juke box represents the gift of music left by my father and embraced by my mother and me Best of all it s a gift that can be shared with many others When asked what s the one thing you would save from your house in a fire I always go to the juke box Practically speaking I don t know how I would manage the 400 pound unwieldy load but I hear that people are capable of great things in times of crisis So anyway thanks for the music Dad And everything else I miss you And I m pretty sure I m not the only one Posted by Bryan Hassin at 11 09 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Guido Hassin music 5 comments Chip said Bryan even from the little glimpses of your life that I see from Facebook I have no doubt your dad would be plenty proud of you I m glad you have such a meaningful gift from him to hold on to as well That juke box sounds awesome Chip Friday May 28 2010 at 12 36 00 PM EDT LakerMrB said I agree with Chip There is no doubt in my mind that he would be extremely proud of you He would tell you that he is finds great satisfaction and joy in the song you are composing with your life I am certain he would be so very pleased and surprised at the level of achievement you have already obtained and the value you bring to the world today As to the jukebox I would recommend attaching it to a platform with large rollers and positioning it for easy egress You might as well plan for it should the save every be necessary I have always believed in hoping for the best and preparing for the worst I know the jukebox is irreplaceable and invaluable yet you might want to consider adding replacement insurance on your house and its contents Then take photos of everything especially the jukebox Speaking of irreplaceable have you looked into replacement parts before they are no longer available Wouldn t hurt to stock up on a few Sorry for the length of this comment I guess my fatherly instincts are kicking in Saturday May 29 2010 at 9 14 00 AM EDT Bryan Guido Hassin said Thanks for the support guys and the practical advice

  • The Green Knight: Congrats to the Rice Class of 2010!
term ends June 3oth It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the 45 000 Rice alumni out there for three years and I look forward to continuing to do so even once I m off the Board Saturday evening featured more Rice festivities including the annual Laureates Dinner at River Oaks Country Club It was a splendid affair and so inspiring to be surrounded by so many people who have contributed so much to the Rice community Many congratulations to this year s winners you serve as role models for the rest of us Sunday continued the Rice trend as we had dinner with some of the other college presidents from back in the day When I stepped forward to serve Lovett College in that capacity for a year I had no idea that the bonds I made would be so powerful and enduring Since then my focus has 100 returned to fundraising This week I ll be pitching to both the Houston Angel Network and the Central Texas Austin Angel Network These represent the most significant near term opportunities for our funding this next round so I really need to nail these pitches 4th quarter time running out and we need a score gimme the ball coach Posted by Bryan Hassin at 17 13 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Rice No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3

  • The Green Knight: New Orleans
friend at Brennan s for brunch so delicious I had a cajun bloody mary crawfish bisque poached eggs a la nouvelle orleans in a sherry cream sauce with lump crabmeat and crepes fitzgerald basically strawberry blintzes What a way to start the day For lunch we all made a pilgrimage to Central Grocery to dine on the original muffuletta Saturday night was dinner at Lüke Swiss fare and more bachelor party shenanigans Sunday came too early and I caught my flight back to Houston On the way to the airport we passed a taxi pulled over on the side of the highway so the passenger could throw up Although it seemed very appropriate for New Orleans I was very glad that it wasn t I I ve always liked New Orleans from the first time I went there to play and beat Tulane in the Superdome to Mardi Gras Once was enough for me to business meetings to bachelor parties That city s had a rough go of it but it s about the most distinctive city in the US There is so much more to it than just Bourbon Street fine dining music art antiques museums and culture This was a great trip and I look forward to my next visit Posted by Bryan Hassin at 13 24 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels food New Orleans No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May

  • The Green Knight: I am not the King of the Beach . . . yet!
ve known my third partner Ricky for years so it was fun to play with him Although we lost by a LOT I can t remember but we may not have even hit double digits he gave me some beautiful sets that I was able to slam down pretty hard He played differently than I was used to so I fear I didn t support him as well as I could have So yikes there I was halfway through my games and winless so far I was feeling great after the third game though so optimistic about the next three My fourth partner Matt was a great player but again we just didn t connect very often and dropped that game My fifth partner Niel had outstanding defense but it was clear that by this point in the day the heat and humidity were really getting to him Some balls got by him that I think he would have had earlier in the day and we narrowly lost game five So even bigger yikes as we began the very last game of the day I was fighting for honor I needed to win at least one My partner was Rod whom I had known for awhile and whom I liked so I was hoping we could connect better The game right before ours though wasn t very encouraging Rod and his partner gave away their 14 7 lead and wound up losing 21 15 They both looked very tired so I was just hoping that Rod would still be able to bring it in our game I knew he would pick up if we could get rolling with a little momentum Instead of giving Rod safe sets off the net I intentionally set him very tight A couple of them were bad sets and went over but a couple of them were dimes and Rod slammed them down This pumped us both up and created that momentum we were looking for Rod gave me some great sets too and although I didn t really kill anything we were able to keep our opponents on the defensive It helped that one of them was hurting in the heat but I intentionally tried not to pick on him and distributed the ball evenly We won the last game 21 11 and despite coming in dead last in the tournament I felt really great about it My challenge in subsequent tournaments will be to reach that state of peak performance before the last game Even though I failed to meet my tournament goal by a long shot I had a lot of fun out there and still felt pretty good about my play May and June tournaments are going to be even hotter so conditioning one of my stronger suits will become even more key Still I can t wait to play again in Switzerland this summer nothing beats the weather and the lake Posted by Bryan Hassin at 23 45 Email This

  • The Green Knight: San Francisco
we could see the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance so we decided to walk to it It turned out to be several miles away but our walk took us through parks along the coast and by beaches It was such a gorgeous day that a walk was just what the doctor ordered We checked out Fort Point just below the bridge then made our way back in time for a late lunch at Ghirardelli Square Lunch was pretty simple a sourdough baguette and some cheese but dessert was divine dark chocolate cupcakes and a chocolate shake We continued along Fisherman s Wharf to Pier 39 where we were delighted to see the sea lions A brisk walk back to the hotel was followed by a very necessary nap This revitalized us enough to head out for the evening First we met up with some other Rice alumni at the Top of the Mark a swanky jazz bar with great martinis and a phenomenal view A trip to San Francisco wouldn t be complete without a meal in Chinatown so our next stop was dinner with some more Rice alumni at R G Lounge which was highly recommended It was described to us as a place where Chinese would take their visiting mothers for dinner very authentic but nicer than a dive I didn t know what I was eating on some of the dishes but it was all very very good After such a day we didn t have much left in the tank for anything but hitting the sack Sunday was more of the same This time we walked to Golden Gate Park and once again the weather was perfect We spent some time in the Conservatory of Flowers and Japanese Tea Garden before winding our way back to the hotel En route we had lunch at Underdog which specializes in ridiculously good organic vegan hot dogs We didn t know quite what to expect there but we were so glad we made the stop After another nap we checked off a major to do item by having dinner at The Stinking Rose in Little Italy It lived up to all expectations with garlic hanging from the ceiling and permeating every dish We shared a bottle of Cakebread chardonnay an order of bagna calda sic and vegetarian lasagne which left enough room for garlic ice cream afterward So so SO good Monday morning Katie returned to Houston while I remained in town for the Investors Circle conference the subject of another post in itself In our brief time in San Francisco we walked 15 miles enjoyed great weather caught up with old friends and ate a LOT of excellent food That pretty much describes the perfect trip for me and I hope for many more to come Posted by Bryan Hassin at 10 55 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels food garlic Rice San Francisco No comments Post a Comment

  • The Green Knight: Rice Builder's Award
can be what I call a Rice ambassador When I was living in Switzerland I set up a fondue dinner for Rice alumni in the area hoping to meet at least one other Owl It turns out that we had 26 alumni and families come it seemed that half the Geneva Symphony Orchestra were Shepherd School grads They were all incredibly interesting and it was a wonderful evening and NONE of them had realized previously that there were other Rice Owls in the area We all still keep in touch a mini community was born There are similar stories from travels to Nairobi London Amsterdam Rome and US cities as well The Rice community is small but it is really really good Members of the Rice community tend to be accomplished interesting fun helpful and we have all been part of something really unique really special which I believe binds us together So I encourage you to be a Rice ambassador by reaching out to Rice people you don t know wherever you go You ve already made the investment in Rice let the Rice community pay back and increase your return By forging connections you re building the community which holds value for all of us This award is a real honor for me I know many of the previous recipients and I am humbled to be counted among them Thanks must be given to them for leading the way to the alumni office for doing such a fine job of supporting encouraging and guiding those of us who wish to serve and to my friends and loved ones especially Katie without whose support I just don t know where I would be The story of Rice is a love story for me From the very first moment that I set foot on campus and fell in love with the university to the loves I developed for computer science and entrepreneurship as a student to the love I have for people in the Rice community from some of my very best friends to the love of my life whom I first kissed at Lovett almost exactly nine years ago today I know that you all have your own Rice love stories so I beseech each and every one of you to help us all build the Rice community by sharing the love I was honored to be introduced by Rice Trustee Jeff Rose a real friend and mentor The event was hosted in the Veranda room of the Alden hotel and many friends and colleagues came out for the evening It was so nice catching up with everyone as well as meeting the new guard of young alumni leaders who have just as much passion and probably even better ideas than we ever did After the reception several of us went to La Carafe and sat outside sipping Amarone and listening to great oldies from the juke box It was the perfect end to a really wonderful evening I

prospect of consolidating devices but after one use I don t think it s ready to be used seriously The GPS was not accurate enough marking a 10k run as 9 35k and it had some other usability quirks Still the audio status updates and integrated music were cool features I ll try it again a few more times but my impression is that it s just not adequate for serious training or racing The rest of Saturday was spent at Oaklawn Park We had a beautiful day and lots of fun betting on horses we knew nothing about I won some money on Lion Man and Do the Tiger so big cats seemed to be a good charm for me I lost some money on some other horses though and came out about even The real point of the day was to spend time with my family and that was accomplished with great success Sunday we ran again and then had Easter at my aunt s house It was so fun to catch up with everyone and stuff ourselves silly with good food There are many things I miss about living in Europe but I am so so happy to back closer to my family here Just being around the people who have been supporting and loving me since the day I was born is invigorating and fills me with positivity and the great food doesn t hurt either We drove back Sunday evening just a quick trip but a good one It was a great Easter for us and I wish everyone out there a great Easter as well Posted by Bryan Hassin at 11 05 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Easter Harry Potter Hot Springs No comments Post a
