  • The Green Knight: Positive Energy
My impression after a very full day is that A the company is really trying to hit it out of the park and significantly affect energy demand B the team is smart high end and C it seems like a good fit where my participation could create value for both the company and for myself Hopefully they will see things the same way Even if they don t however I m glad to know that such companies exist As I ve blogged before I think the solution to the global energy challenge has to be one that also makes good business sense otherwise it just won t be sustainable And speaking of the global energy challenge Gore et al have already offered up a public challenge to the Obama administration US carbon neutrality in 10 years I love it Nearly impossible worthwhile challenges have always inspired me and I view the energy challenge as very synonymous with the space race of the 60s Why reduce energy consumption streamline transmission and produce energy from renewable sources Why does Rice play Texas We choose to achieve a carbon neutral energy infrastructure within a decade and do the other things not because they are easy but because they are hard The stakes are higher in this challenge and I am committed to doing what I can to help ensure victory Posted by Bryan Hassin at 11 43 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels alternative energy career services Positive Energy 1 comment Mike Scudamore said The son of Dr Guido Hassin is always welcome at SPARTA Mike Scudamore SPARTA Emp 54 Your father was 45 Friday November 7 2008 at 11 52 00 AM EST Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments

  • The Green Knight: The First Cleanweb Hackathon in Texas
Waste Management METRO and Rice s own Shell Center for Sustainability These proprietary data sets presented a unique opportunity for our participants to build very practical solutions to very real problems Next we opened up the floor for participants to pitch their ideas what they they wanted to work on for the next 48 hours This was followed by mingling Q A and building teams around each idea Development wouldn t start in earnest until Saturday so we took everyone out to the Gingerman for team bonding before all the work began Saturday morning people arrived early and got to work It was amazing to see students industry professionals NASA engineers and public servants working alongside each other Different backgrounds experiences skillsets problem solving approaches etc all combined together for some very innovative solutions The teams worked all day nourished by food donated by MyFitFoods and well into the night Many teams actually worked all through the night as well or slept onsite in shifts Sunday morning the teams wrapped up their work and in the afternoon we held final demos and presentations which were live streamed over the Internet We brought in a crack team of judges from many disciplines to determine which of our seven teams had accomplished the most in such a short span of time I was really impressed with all of the teams but the winners were 1st C02 Commuter Contributions a web app to motivate people to make more sustainable commuting choices by translating their greenhouse gas contributions into real terms One of the reasons this team won was really beautiful design 2nd Amazing Houston a web and mobile app to show public transportation users all the cool places they could visit easily from intermediate stops en route to their destination This pulled real time GPS data from METRO s API so it could tell users who stop off for coffee to pay their bill quickly because the next train is arriving in a few minutes 3rd Revolutionary Trashcans a mobile app that connects to a wireless scale underneath your trashcan and tells you how much food you re throwing away The hardware was developed last semester by one of the teams in my entrepreneurship class and now with the mobile app in place they are ready to begin selling to school cafeterias nationwide It was an exhausting weekend and one that reminded me a lot of my collegiate experience After all Duncan Hall was where many of my late nights were spent back then I was incredibly pleased with the results though Indeed many of the projects were quite practical as we had hoped Several groups are continuing to develop theirs with an eye toward commercialization and Waste Management has already approached one of our winners about a partnership Moreover we re pleased to have fostered so many connections over the weekend 55 participants and 20 volunteers all motivated to build software for sustainability The event is over but the movement is just

approaches exist and what would be their tradeoffs What do you think about these issues I don t have any conclusions of my own yet as I m just starting to consider them Posted by Bryan Hassin at 14 40 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Economics IPE USA 7 comments George Webb said Ultimately I think that mobility is more important than equality A society in which the sons of the poor have a very good chance of becoming rich and vice versa is far preferable to one in which relative wealth however tightly clustered is static across generation Historically the US has had a degree of income mobility and not coincidentally physical mobility that was unparalleled in the Old World and which is in fact a defining characteristic of the New World compared to the Old If we lose THAT we ve really lost something Tuesday October 22 2013 at 3 11 00 PM EDT Bloggar said I ll add If a country has high social mobility does this not imply its also easy to drop down in wealth Tuesday October 22 2013 at 3 26 00 PM EDT Bryan Hassin said George take a look at the Wikipedia article I linked to about socio economic mobility in the US it paints a very different picture of how mobile we actually vs what we like to believe That s what has me most interested in furthering this discussion Tuesday October 22 2013 at 3 30 00 PM EDT Bryan Hassin said Bloggar I m not sure but I would think so Even if the economy is expanding these are relative measures so it shouldn t be possible for someone to jump up without knocking someone else down For this reason it seems quite intuitive that those in the top echelon today and therefore with the greatest means to influence public and corporate policy might actually be motivated to curtail mobility Tuesday October 22 2013 at 3 32 00 PM EDT kb23 said Mobility seems like it would be a good metric However the reality of mobility includes the fact that our welfare system doesn t provide incentives to use it only as a safety net and this leads to chronic reliance on it For example a family who really needs health care coverage may lose that by accepting a job without benefits On a related note I find it very interesting that those who work minimum wage jobs often rely on SNAP benefits a k a food stamps to feed their families How do we align incentives appropriately while still providing a safety net that works assuming most people like myself believe in maintaining a safety net system Tuesday October 22 2013 at 6 05 00 PM EDT kb23 said Mobility seems like it would be a good metric However the reality of mobility includes the fact that our welfare system doesn t provide incentives to use it only as a

believable This is a testament not only to the production techniques using robotic attachments to move actors around as if they were in null gravity but also to the skill of the actors Decades ago actors acted on real sets and interacted with real objects people In this movie though actors were in front of green screens and I m not sure any of them were actually in the studio at the same time This must take an extra level of skill to act believably in a completely produced environment All in all the movie was very good and definitely worth seeing especially in IMAX 3D Its themes of rebirth are a bit heavy handed but it is a beautiful compelling story about the triumph of the persisent human spirit For those of you have seen it already what did you think Posted by Bryan Hassin at 11 54 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels movies 1 comment Vivas Kumar said Absolutely loved this movie Was blown away by the camera work and the underlying plotline about Sandra Bullock s character s internal struggle Also there are not many directors who can pull off writing such a good character focused story and use just one character for the bulk of the movie Highly recommend it Tuesday October 22 2013 at 12 10 00 PM EDT Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 March 2

  • The Green Knight: IMD MBA 2008 Reunion in Lausanne, Switzerland
generated as the rest of the day classmates kept engaging me with their ideas feedback offers to make useful introductions and even a few offers of investment The highlights of the day were lunch and dinner both served at IMD s famous restaurant The food is just as amazing as I remember it as is the post food ping pong with classmates After dinner several of us went out to a bar in Le Flon and once we closed it down then proceeded to a nearby club L Atelier Volant the very first Lausanne club I ever frequented It has been a long long time since I stayed out until 4 AM but as much fun as I was having catching up with classmates I could have stayed out indefinitely After the late night morning came much too soon Once again though the collective energy of the class was infectious as we boarded a morning bus for the Parc Aventure in Aigle The adventure park is a large wooded park with ropes courses of varying difficulties between and among all the trees We arrived suited up in our harnesses and spent the day challenging ourselves to make it through one obstacle course after another many meters above the forest floor and the most difficult courses even had parts that extended out over a river Much like the IMD MBA itself it was a LOT of fun in hindsight While I was out there grappling tight rope walking and zip lining though it was actually quite stressful anyone who knows my lack of command of balance will understand why Saturday night we had dinner at a new restaurant started by an IMD alum from the class of 2007 Eat Me Although we started early we still closed the restaurant down after more than seven hours of eating drinking and making merry with dear friends we hadn t seen in awhile some not since graduation Sunday there was a soccer match between our class and the current MBAs which we won of course followed by a closing lunch at our favorite class hangout Le Pinocchio The weather which had been gorgeous all weekend continued to impress so I took a slow jog along the lake to the park where soccer was being played and then another jog back to Lutry after lunch Sometimes I wonder if my memory of living in Switzerland perfect weather beautiful views of lakes and mountains is somewhat idealized but days like Sunday remind me that it really is a fantastic place And there you have it after a three day sprint our reunion is over The reunion itself actually seemed like a microcosm of the IMD experience late nights intense days and much joy in being together Even as much time as we spent together though there are some people with whom I regret not catching up more Much has changed since we underwent the MBA journey together five years ago Jobs have changed families have grown

  • The Green Knight: I'm moving to Switzerland!
The IMD program structure I wasn t sure this was for me until I interviewed on campus The challenges were hard and I learned a lot from them The other applicants Most of the day s affairs were conducted in groups were incredibly smart successful and diverse I learned more that day than I had in probably my previous several months on the job just imagine what I could learn in a whole year Needless to say I came back ready to sign on if accepted Just a few days later I received the call from IMD s Admissions Director and I was on board HOW did will this happen None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support I received this year from friends family and colleagues I engaged 50 people in my information gathering stage to determine what my options for leadership development were and which would be most appropriate for me Everyone provided incredibly valuable insight and I used all of it in my decision making process When I finally made the decision to apply to IMD there was only one week left before their final deadline I had to mobilize myself essays GMAT application forms and others recommendations on very short notice Without my recommenders and essay editors I probably never would have been accepted they were invaluable Now as I prepare to move halfway around the world for a year or maybe longer everyone s support continues to be my greatest asset As I rent out my house sell my car apply for a visa find a place to live in Lausanne read assigned books prepare assigned writings transition my R7 responsibilities transition some but not all of my Rice Alumni responsibilities buy cold weather clothes for the first time in 10 years etc etc knowing that everyone is behind me keeps me going What will I do after I ve finished this program I don t know For once in my life I m not overplanning My mind is open to all possibilities in the meantime I am focused on personal growth One of the hardest decisions a person can make is to leave a comfortable situation I am leaving a life I love for a year of extremely hard work and no clear outcome However I owe it to everyone who believes in me if by doing so I can prepare myself to make the world a better place I am eager to begin and excited to see where unknown opportunities will take me HOW to stay in touch My electronic contact information will remain the same and I will post new phone and address information once I have it This blog will serve as the primary medium for me to publish updates pictures and stories My plan is not to email everyone every time I have something to say Instead those interested can subscribe using RSS to this blog and be automatically notified every time I post I hope to

  • The Green Knight: Saturday Night Fever
there it was nearing time for my departure and hearing the same tired reggaeton beats over and over again which apparently are the same songs they play there every Saturday night reinforced my decision to go Griping aside I had an awesome time It was great to get out there and let loose for a few hours Each time more members of our class showed up there was this great feeling of inclusion and excitement as we welcomed them to somewhere that wasn t IMD We had one classmate with a birthday and another with his wife s birthday so it was fun to celebrate with them It s actually a good thing that the club didn t wow me If they had been playing classic 80s and or rock upstairs or good hip hop downstairs I may have been caught up in my own energy and stayed way too long Instead I extracted myself by 1 15 got some reading done at home and went to bed in preparation for a morning workout which I m off to now Posted by Bryan Hassin at 02 21 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels 80s dancing Flon imd l Atelier Volant Lausanne St Martin Switzerland The Handsomes Top Gun 1 comment mikecoxtx said Damn right we would have owned that place They would have been begging us to some back after one time Well at least the bartender would have after we got her wasted off mystery shots Sunday February 10 2008 at 11 33 00 AM EST Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete

  • The Green Knight: Life in Chapel Hill
here for school or work This endows the region with a strong diversity of culture opinion and industry interest Like Houston the area also has incredibly low cost of living which extends from the low real estate prices to the multitude of inexpensive healthy delicious food options In some ways however Chapel Hill is completely unlike Houston At least twice since we moved in the temperature has reached down into the 60s F at night don t they know it s August And although people here complain about traffic they apparently have no idea what real traffic is I ve been out on the major through ways during what passes for rush hour here and you almost wouldn t know that you were driving during a peak time On the subject of transportation there is very good public transportation here The municipal buses run all over the place with UNC Chapel Hill as the main hub all day and are completely free Katie and I are now a single car family I have left my car in Houston because I am still spending so much time there and even so her car doesn t get much use She is able to walk and or take the bus to school and I can bus around to most places as well There are many aspects of the area that we still haven t explored For example there is a thriving craft beer scene here that I would love to get to know A few hours to our west is great mountain hiking and a few hours to our east are some good beaches hopefully we will have a chance to check those out soon In the meantime I m still spending a great deal of time in Houston which reduces my bandwidth
