  • The Green Knight: Luzern
up with them After dinner they dropped us off at the KKL concert hall for a Morcheeba concert I discovered Morcheeba almost 10 years ago while I was living in Florence but had never seen them live For the last several years I haven t had much interest in seeing them live without Skye Edwards their original vocalist However they reunited for their most recent album so the timing was just perfect After a really subpar warmup act One redeeming factor he led a Bohemian Rhapsody sing a long before finishing Morcheeba took the stage and ROCKED OUT Their live songs bear enough resemblance to the studio originals that they are still awesome but their showmanship definitely adds a significant can t get this on the album element too They played a great mix of of their older favorites and new additions Skye Edwards has just as an awesome voice live as she does on recordings so I m so glad she s back The one downside was that the crowd was very Swiss Almost no one was dancing or singing and it was tough for the rest of us to get down without bumping into people Oh well the music got Katie and me so pumped up that we just had to let loose anyway When the concert finally ended we were sweaty and satisfied after a great performance Sunday we spent just walking around Luzern including a traipse around the lake to Wagner s house We met up with another IMD classmate and his wife for a late lunch and had dinner along the river with Katie s family No agenda just walking around a beautiful place and enjoying good food with good people Acacia caused a stir wherever she went She s a very big girl Not sure exactly how big maybe 100 pounds and tourists are either scared by her or enchanted by her Many tourists especially Asians timidly requested to have their picture taken with her She s so sweet and good natured that this was no problem at all And each restaurant we frequented brought her out a bowl of water again it s so nice to be in a place that supports dogs and their owners Monday morning we ascended Mount Pilatus which offered gorgeous 360 degree views of mostly clouds since there was a lot of cloud cover that day Oh well it was still a fun trip and there was some good mini hiking at the top Again Acacia was so good on multiple modes of transportation train funicular cable car and bus It was a nice excursion to wrap up a quick but excellent weekend with family and friends in a new place Now we are back in Lutry Katie is on vacation and I m trying to sneak in work during her naps and reading sessions As I ve known since her first visit during my IMD year Switzerland is so so much better with her here Posted by

  • The Green Knight: Traveling Recommendations for Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland
cafe not the full restaurant The full restaurant is Michelin starred and obscenely expensive The cafe offers the same food and costs 1 3 as much still not cheap given the damned exchange rate Further up from Beau Rivage is the Croix d Ouchy a little less elegant but just as nice For authentic Swiss fondue I recommend Cafe Romand near St Francois or Cafe du Vieil Ouchy on the water Other Ideas Take the ferry across the lake to Evian Take a day trip to Gruyeres and see how cheese and chocolate are made Take the train or bus to Lutry and hop on the Lavaux Express a mini train that winds through the vineyards and stops for several tastings Swiss wine is so so and overpriced but when the weather is nice this makes for a lovely outing Nyons and Montreux are particularly scenic with their chateaux right along the lake If you go all the way to Montreux another 15 minutes by train beyond Lausanne you can see the iconic Freddy Mercury statue near the Jazz Festival location He Audrey Hepburn and some others are buried there If you really want to take in many of the towns chateaux along the lake take a sunset dinner cruise which will take you by each one What do you think have I captured it or missed the mark Any other recommendations to add Posted by Bryan Hassin at 21 56 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels geneva Gruyeres Lausanne Lutry Montreux Nyons No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google

  • The Green Knight: A Few Days En Suisse
at the famous IMD restaurant It was just as good as I remembered and offered plenty of excellent vegetables and fish so that I could dilute my cheese consumption a little After working from the IMD cafe all afternoon I went back up the mountain and did some trail running The previous several days of perfect weather were finally at an end and the mountain slopes were shrouded in a misty fog This made for another fairy tale experience picking my way first through the Parc de l Hermitage and then the Bois de Sauvabelin truly magical My hosts and I joined another IMD classmate for dinner at a local Italian restaurant It turns out that on Monday nights they only have pizza available so it became another delicious cheat meal for me Much as my breakfast classmate was launching a new venture so was this other classmate at dinner I m beginning to notice a trend I suppose alumni of the IMD MBA class of 2008 are nearing their seven year itch at their corporate jobs and starting to explore more entrepreneurial opportunities It was quite rewarding to learn that my classmate had actually followed my online entrepreneurship lectures and found them very beneficial glad to help Tuesday I began the day with a run along the lake The fog over the lake and the Chateau d Ouchy recalled visions of the mists of Avalon In order to make it back to my apartment shower and then return to Ouchy for meetings at IMD in time I took the metro up and back On the way up I received lots of stares as someone who was clearly out of place Dressed in Under Armour and wearing Vibrams Fivefingers shoes I was looking very un Swiss However on my way back down to IMD I received even more stares this time because of my Google Glass which is even less common in Europe than it is the US Being so blatantly stared at was a really interesting sociological experience Even as extroverted as I am even as much as I enjoy the spotlight I felt uncomfortable by the unapologetic gawking on the metro I can only imagine how uncomfortable women feel when they are gawked at in public or worse catcalled and harassed Clearly this wasn t as much of an epiphanous experience as for example Dustin Hoffman s character experienced in Tootsie but it still opened my eyes somewhat to how people in the minority feel when they are clearly out of place within the majority As a white American male I am more often in the majority in the US so I will try to be more sensitive to those who are not Tuesday I got a little work done at IMD but spent most of my time catching up with former professors I even went to dinner with one Fondue again the diet was on full pause by this point who was on the verge of taking

a delicious meal of escargots cold meats fondue and incredible desserts Cream cheese and chocolate were made there at the dairy so were prominently featured throughout the menu Add a little OK a lot Swiss white wine and great conversation and we found ourselves back at IMD after midnight The crisp night air and bright stars up in the mountains were really refreshing Switzerland is not a bad place to live I wish the deskNET team all the best and I look forward to following their success Today has been a great day for USA volleyball Misty May and Kerri Walsh won their second consecutive Olympic gold in beach volleyball their 108th consecutive match win while the indoor women s team advanced to the gold medal match Tomorrow it s time for the men to show that they can keep up Posted by Bryan Hassin at 01 44 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels imd Olympics Sobees startup Switzerland USA volleyball No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 March 2 February 3 January 2 2014 26 November 4 October 3 August 3 July 3 June 7 April 1 March 3 February 1 January 1 2013 32 December 2 November 3 October 3 September 2 August 1 July 1 June 2 May 2 April 1 March 2 February 2 January 11 2012 35 December 2 November 1 October 4 September 3 August 6

  • The Green Knight: Doctors in Action
only in Chinese Fortunately one of the flight attendants could ready Simplified Chinese so together the three of them were able to piece together answers to the diagnostic questions At the end of the day the woman seemed to be fine but it was a really interesting experience to watch It was quite inspiring actually In today s litigious environment I wouldn t have blamed doctors for not treating a patient without several pages of liability waivers in place first But these two doctors who had long ago taken the Hippocratic Oath sprung into action with only a care for the patient I am often critical of our overly complicated misaligned incentive driven healthcare industry However as long as doctors like these two passengers are around I breathe a little more easily Thanks to them and to all the others out there who have devoted their lives to healing Posted by Bryan Hassin at 15 27 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels doctors No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 Doctors in Action Tarheel 4 Miler Race Report Spring in Chapel Hill March 2 February 3 January 2 2014 26 November 4 October 3 August 3 July 3 June 7 April 1 March 3 February 1 January 1 2013 32 December 2 November 3 October 3 September 2 August 1 July 1 June 2 May 2 April 1 March 2 February 2

  • The Green Knight: Tarheel 4 Miler Race Report
43 My average heart rate was down to 171 so maybe I wasn t pushing hard enough However knowing what was coming next motivated me to play conservatively here The end of the 4th km marked the beginning of the Laurel Hill Challenge a full mile of steep incline Time to pay for those early downhills with only a few flat segments There was a timing mat at the bottom and another at the top so runners were scored not just on their overall times but also their splits for Laurel Hill The 5th km was a trudge 5 11 at a 176 average heart rate The 6th km was pretty rough for the first half and then flatter and even a little downhill for the second half 4 38 overall but averaging 180 BPM I wasn t concerned about the high heart rate at this point because there was very little race left My nemesis was back in my sights now but I couldn t quite close the gap The final half km last year went through the stadium tunnel and then finished in the football stadium Not only was that a very cool experience it was a very flat experience as well This year due to stadium maintenance the final half km went back uphill almost back to the starting point oy not fun at all I channeled my inner Rocky and left it all out there finishing this segment in 2 02 hitting a max heart rate of 187 Perhaps best of all this is where I passed my nemesis the streak is intact My final time was 28 58 only a few seconds faster than last year but on a slower course due to the final uphill My Laurel Hill split was 7 28 vs 7

  • The Green Knight: Spring in Chapel Hill
is that walking to work is really nice right now It really is neat being back in a place with four seasons as it creates a much more dynamic environment When we first moved in we had no idea that we had so many neighbors because they were all hidden by the dense woods between our houses As the leaves fell nearby houses began to appear Now that it is spring every time we go outdoors there is more and thicker foliage than before What was a barren forest just weeks ago is now a vibrant green and is teaming with life Once again our home feels like an isolated treehouse hidden away in the forest There s something about the cycle of seasons that just seems so natural I m not sure which is my favorite spring or fall but I am really loving the opportunity to experience them both again Posted by Bryan Hassin at 15 00 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels Chapel Hill No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech entrepreneur with global experience Rice Owl IMD alum and lover of both wine and sports View my complete profile Google Badge Twitter Blog Archive 2016 1 January 1 2015 28 December 3 November 1 October 2 September 5 August 1 July 1 June 4 May 1 April 3 Doctors in Action Tarheel 4 Miler Race Report Spring in Chapel Hill March 2 February 3 January 2 2014 26 November 4 October 3 August 3 July 3 June 7 April 1 March 3 February 1 January 1 2013 32 December 2 November 3 October 3 September 2 August 1 July 1 June 2 May 2 April 1

  • The Green Knight: Should Your Kid Be Allowed to Play Football?
for him to have access to that sandbox too But we now know much more than we did back then about the implications of repetitive head trauma I m not sure I would let a son play today knowing what we now know Although I feel blessed to have made it through a college career without any major injuries or surgeries which I can t say about many of my teammates lord knows I played through some concussions in my day And lord knows I dished out many more concussions than I received something of which I was proud at the time but at which I look back now with regret New research seems to be implicating other sports like soccer as well in such head trauma although I really can t imagine that it s at the same level But it does remind me that the question isn t Is football dangerous It s Is football more dangerous than other sports If so how much more so At the end of the day parents can t protect children from all dangers In fact it would be a disservice for them to do so lest their children grow up completely unable to defend for themselves So I suppose it s up to parents and athletes to make an informed decision about whether the unique risks of an activity outweigh its unique rewards One thing is clear though in order to empower parents and athletes to make that assessment for football we need more better and more available data Posted by Bryan Hassin at 19 48 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels football parenting No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom About Me Bryan Hassin Cleantech
